EMS from Japan: the weight bands

Totals on this site default to Japan Post's EMS, the one service all five proxies offer (other methods are compared in the shipping methods guide). EMS is not charged by the gram. It is charged in bands, and a parcel pays for the whole band it falls in. The full table for the countries this site covers is below.

Japan Post EMS, checked 2026-10-06. Countries in the same column share a price zone. Japan Post's bands: the first band ends at 500 g, then 100 g steps up to 1 kg, 250 g steps up to 2 kg, 500 g steps up to 6 kg, 1 kg steps up to 30 kg. A parcel is priced at the band it falls in.

What each extra step costs

Between some common weights, to United States: ¥1,400 from 500 g to 1 kg, ¥1,300 from 1 kg to 1.5 kg, ¥1,300 from 1.5 kg to 2 kg, ¥2,400 from 2 kg to 3 kg, ¥4,800 from 3 kg to 5 kg. To Taiwan, the same gaps cost ¥750, ¥600, ¥600, ¥1,000, ¥2,000.

Per kilogram, heavier parcels are much cheaper. To United States, a 500 g parcel costs the equivalent of ¥7,800 per kg; a 5 kg parcel costs ¥3,020 per kg, and a 30 kg parcel ¥2,503 per kg. That is the arithmetic behind consolidating purchases into one box.

How much of an order is postage

On a ¥10,000, 1 kg Mercari order through the cheapest service, EMS makes up 33% of the total to United States, 29% of the total to Canada, 26% of the total to Australia, 24% of the total to Germany, 24% of the total to United Kingdom, 24% of the total to France, 22% of the total to Hong Kong, 21% of the total to Singapore, 16% of the total to Taiwan. It is the same whichever proxy you use, so no choice of service makes it go away. Only the weight and the destination change it.

Weight once packed, not item weight

The weight that counts is the parcel's, including the box and padding the warehouse adds. A boxed figure that weighs 800 g on its own can cross into the next band once packed. If you are close to a boundary, check the packed weight the warehouse reports before you pay for international shipping.

Where the band boundaries bite

The single biggest step in this table is ¥2,400, from 6 kg to 7 kg to United States. The cheapest step is ¥150, from 500 g to 600 g to Taiwan. Either way, one gram over a boundary costs the whole step.
